Preparing Files? Don’t Forget the Fonts!

It's perhaps the most common oversight when preparing files for printing: missing fonts! Every font you use in a document - including bold or italic versions - must be included with your layout file when submitting your job to a printer. Here are a few tips to help you manage your fonts when preparing your documents.
Be sure to consolidate all your fonts - don’t forget to include both screen and printer versions - prior to sending your document to us.

All About Organization
Layout files don't include the actual fonts necessary to print your pieces. Instead, they pull a “screen font” - a version used for monitor display - from your computer. When sending fonts to Springfield Printing, be sure to collect both screen and printer versions. Without one or the other, production on your project cannot continue.

An even better solution is to use a preflight software, which creates copies of all fonts and images used and consolidates them in easy-to-find folders. At Springfield Printing, we use Markzware FlightCheck as part of our prepress process to be sure all required elements of your document are present. Ask us for more information about preflight software if you’re interested in using it.

If you will be sending PDF files, be sure to embed all fonts within the file. This can be performed by selecting “Embed All Fonts” from the Adobe Distiller Job Options menu. For more detailed font management information, feel free to call Aaron Ambrosino in our prepress department at any time.
